Asthma

Strong Child

In an effort to better serve our pediatric asthma patients, North Raleigh Pediatric Group has recently developed an Asthma Education Program to help parents and patients understand pediatric asthma and feel confident in managing their child’s condition.

Even though asthma symptoms can be intermittent, asthma is a lifelong disease. A person with asthma has persistent airway sensitivity. Symptoms of asthma can be a frequent persistent cough, chest tightness, wheezing and/or breathlessness. If a child has an asthma attack, it can be a frightening experience for both the child and the parent. Having a good understanding of what asthma is, the signs of an impending attack, when and how to administer asthma medications, and when to seek medical care is important. Knowing this can help parents better manage their child’s asthma and minimize its impact.

An asthma education visit will focus on asthma education and will include a brief symptom survey using the Asthma Control Test (ACT). The visit may also include a breathing test to measure lung function. Both tests can help the doctor determine the severity of your child’s asthma and help form the treatment plan. You will receive an Asthma Action Plan for your child at the visit.  The Action Plan states clearly how to manage your child’s asthma when all is going well, when an asthma attack is beginning, and what to do for a severe attack.

Asthma can’t be cured, but it can be managed effectively. North Raleigh Pediatric Group gives you the knowledge and resources needed to help you control your child’s asthma. Please call our office to schedule an Asthma Education visit for your child. Help us to help you manage your child’s asthma.
