ADD / ADHD Education and Management

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is now diagnosed in about 5% of all school age children. North Raleigh Pediatrics uses standardized rating scales to determine if a patient meets criteria for the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD.

Elementary and middle school children are evaluated using the Vanderbilt Scales. Vanderbilt forms are used for the initial diagnosis and follow-up assessments. These forms must be completed by each parent and two teachers.

High School and college students are evaluated using the Teen Assessment Forms (ADHD-RS Checklist). The student, each parent and one teacher should use this form for the initial diagnosis and follow-up assessments. Patients 18 years and older must contact us themselves for any medication changes. Parents of adult patients cannot request medication changes.

Medication follow-ups will need to occur independently from annual physical exams. This is because of the extra time needed to assess the patient’s response to medication, as well as performance in school, at home and during extracurricular activities.

First Visit Evaluation for ADHD Diagnosis

During the initial phase of treatment, visits will need to occur monthly to fine tune the medication for your child. Once ADHD symptoms are stable, visits will occur every 3 to 6 months.

Requirements to schedule an Initial ADD/ADHD Evaluation appointment:

  1. Please complete and return the Initial Assessment Forms for each parent and two teachers. When all forms are returned to our office, our ADHD Coordinator will call you to schedule the initial evaluation visit and the 21 day medication evaluation visit (this visit is required to receive medication refills).
  2. If the patient has already been evaluated, these records are needed in addition to new forms and an appointment will be scheduled.
  3. If the patient is transferring to us and is stable on medication, medical treatment records are required prior to scheduling evaluation visit.
  4. Following the initial ADHD visit and after medication changes, our ADHD Coordinator will be contacting you to perform a medication phone follow up as needed.

ADD/ADHD Follow-Up Appointments

For careful management of ADHD patients on medication, North Raleigh Pediatrics requires an ADHD recheck every 3-6 months. When follow up assessment forms are required, please make sure to bring the completed forms to your appointment.

Recent Insurance and Medication Changes

As of April 2017, due to Health Insurance Utilization Management changes, your prescription benefit plan may require prior authorization for your ADD/ADHD medication. Please contact your insurance company and ask them which ADD/ADHD medications are covered in your preferred medications benefits. Below is a list below of commonly prescribed medications used to treat ADD/ADHD.
